Osama Bin Laden Shot Dead in India

PATNA, India – An elephant nicknamed “Osama bin Laden” that killed at least 11 people and injured dozens has been shot dead, officials in eastern India said on Saturday.

The wild male elephant had been terrorizing villagers in two states in recent months, destroying their crops and homes.

Forest officials and a police team tracked down the rogue jumbo in the eastern state of Jharkhand late on Friday, where it was shot dead, senior government official Ravi Ranjan said.

“Yes, Osama has finally been killed and it took us 20 bullets to silence him,” Ranjan told Reuters from Jharkhand on Saturday.

Deadly rampage
Hundreds of villagers gathered on Saturday to catch a glimpse of the dead elephant.

On Thursday, another elephant rampaged through a village in northern India, killing at least seven people and injuring 24 others before it was killed.

The female entered the village of Bhudaheda on the edge of the Jim Corbett National Park, and began destroying crops, said Srikant Chandola, the park’s chief wildlife officer. He said the animal started trampling people when residents tried to frighten it away by beating drums.

Belinda Wright, director of the Wildlife Protection Society of India, said the elephant had apparently entered the village after becoming separated from its herd.

Vancouver Student Killed by Helicopter– Canada blames ipod for death

Loud iPod headphones have been partly blamed after an oblivious student was hit and killed by a helicopter.

Isaiah Otieno was listening to music while walking down the street – only to be struck by the aircraft that had crashed to the ground.

The 23-year-old Canadian was dragged along the pavement in Vancouver and died of his injuries. The pilot and two passengers were also killed.

Now the tragedy has prompted a debate on whether there ought to be more restrictions on the volume of headphones attached to personal music players.

Witnesses said Mr Otieno seemed oblivious to any danger, while listening to his iPod using in-ear headphones passed through the hood of his shirt.

The student had arrived in Canada to study two years ago, after growing up in Kenya.

Isaiah’s father Dalmas Otieno, Kenya’s minister of state for public service, said: “Everybody is just shattered here.

“They’re just praying that they have enough strength to go through all this.

“He was a brilliant student, very considerate, very aggressive at times. He had strong leadership qualities.”

In the US, New York Democratic Senator Carl Kruger tried to pass a bill banning pedestrians from listening iPods and other music players as they cross the road.

The British charity Deafness Research UK last year promoted a campaign with a similar aim.

After the latest tragedy, British Columbia University audiologist Lorienne Jenstad said: “There are a lot of beliefs and assumptions right now on how dangerous this headphone use is, but currently no data to back them up.

“In our own informal tests, we’ve found that the range of volume used is very wide – from moderate to levels that are potentially able to cut out all background noise.”

Vancouver-based digital music consultant Geordon Hoag said: “The average downtown street registers at around 60 decibels.

“A jet plane flying overhead is generally quoted at 120 to 130 decibels.

“If you are playing your music loud enough to cut out that level of noise, then you have it cranked to a degree that is damaging your hearing.”

How the fuck does this spark a debate over ipod headphones? A helicopter smashing into building windows and ultimatly falling like a rock into any pedistrians below isnt exactly an avoidable feat. WTF?

Chick Sexers

“The occupation of chick sexers was classified in a test case decided by the Eighth Circuit in 1962, Saiki v. U.S. 677 There, a partnership was engaged in the business of supplying trained chick sexers to various hatcheries in some 14 different states. The job of the chick sexer is to determine the sex of newly hatched chicks. It is an extremely skilled occupation, requiring four to six months preparatory schooling and approximately three years of apprenticeship. The partnership would supply the chick sexers with cards advising them of the date and number of chicks that each hatchery in the chick sexer’s area wished to have sexed. While it was important that the sexers arrive at the hatcheries as soon after the chicks were hatched as possible, the sexers made their own schedules, furnished their own equipment and made their own arrangements. The equipment consisted merely of an ordinary lamp and a 200 watt bulb. The partnership furnished labels and a receipt book. The hatchery furnished a table and a room for sexing. The sexers worked on a fee basis varying from one-half cent to one cent per chick and, at season’s end, paid the partnership from 71/2 to 25% of their income as commissions for the referrals to the hatcheries. The contract prices were established by the sexers with the hatcheries, although the partnership had some influence regarding the prices. The sexers were free to accept or reject work and their contracts prohibited working through anyone other than the partnership; this provision, however, was not enforced. Indeed, some of the sexers did have independent contracts with certain hatcheries. There was no immediate supervision and, in each area, there was one senior sexer or “supervisor” who made weekly reports to the partnership and, as a result, got a reduction on the commission of 21/2%. The partnership was liable to the hatcheries for faulty work and, concomitantly, the sexers were liable to the partnership for faulty work. About 90% of any such faulty work adjustments were, nevertheless, made directly between the sexers and the hatcheries”.677
